After more than 25 years of advocacy led by Health & Medicine’s Birth Center Task Force
, we are pleased to share that the first free standing birth center (FSBC) in Illinois has opened at PCC Community Wellness
. In the center’s first week of operation, two healthy babies have been born and we look forward to many more in the years to come.
Health & Medicine has long championed the potential of FSBC to provide cost-effective, high-quality prenatal and obstetrical services, providing women an additional option when choosing where to give birth. Our policy expertise and leadership has guided every step of the process to open the first center, helping to draft and pass FSBC legislation, serving as a liaison to the Illinois Department of Public Health on this initiative, and providing advice and guidance to groups working to open centers. We are thrilled that this new birthing option is finally available to women in Illinois.
