Chicago’s Area Health Education Center (AHEC) has received an important green light to continue its work challenging health disparities by promoting diversity in the healthcare workforce. AHEC is a collaborative program of Health & Medicine Policy Research Group and the University of Illinois, and is part of a national initiative that promotes health careers and enhances the training of health professionals. Chicago AHEC’s purpose is to meet primary care & public health needs in the Chicago area through health career promotion, community-based student education, professional education and support and policy development. The program is designed to lead to jobs in the health professions along a continuum from entry level to professional. Funding was renewed by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), allowing the program to continue until March, 2013.
