Meet our Staff: Melissa Martin

January 29, 2019 Written By: Health & Medicine Policy Research Group (HMPRG)

Melissa Martin, MPH joined Health and Medicine this month as the Director of Chicago AHEC. Melissa has several years of experience working in public health workforce development. Most recently she worked as a training and technical assistance (T/TA) specialist at a national T/TA center, building the capacity of the public health workforce to address substance misuse priorities. Melissa has a Masters of Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago and in her spare time she enjoys running, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

What interested you in working at Health & Medicine?

I have been familiar with the work of Health & Medicine for several years, and its been an organization I have supported regularly. I was incredibly excited to apply for the Chicago AHEC opportunity because the position aligns so many of my favorite things: workforce development, project management, policy, and working with young people to name a few.

Is there an AHEC project or activity you’re particularly excited about?

I am very excited to launch the AHEC Scholars Program. So far I have a lot of flexibility to be creative in how the program is developed and implemented, and I am looking forward to building a strong program to support those aspiring to work in health care.

What sort of things do you like to do outside of work?

I love cooking and eating, you can find me in my kitchen 90% of the time. I also love to travel and try to go on at least one domestic and one international trip per year.

What did you want to be when you were a child?

I wanted to own a thrift store! I was going to name it Bea Parker Boutique after my grandmother. She always took me to the thrift shops with her and it was so fun as a kid to dig though old stuff.
