Toward Healthcare for All: The Opportunity to Act Now

Jan 26, 2019

Co-Hosted by Chicago Women Take Action, Healthy Illinois Campaign, Health & Medicine Policy Research Group, Indivisible Chicago Alliance, Protect our Care Illinois, and SEIU Healthcare

On Saturday, January 26 at SEIU Healthcare IL, over 100 activists, community members, health professionals, and others interested in healthcare access and health equity came together to learn, connect with others working to expand health insurance coverage, and explore how to work toward healthcare for all in our state and the nation.

Background

In 2017, almost 10% of people nationally and almost 900,000 thousand Illinoisans remained uninsured. Our healthcare system is fragmented, complicated, and still too costly for most of us. Increasing numbers of Americans and elected officials are calling for “Medicare for All”—where healthcare is a human right, guaranteed by health insurance for all, and accessible and free at the point of service. We have much to do to get to this system, and here in Illinois we have an opportunity to move forward, given the election of a Governor who ran on a platform of expanding healthcare coverage in our state.

Passage and implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) expanded health insurance coverage to millions of people. Still, the ACA has been met with ongoing efforts to undermine the law under the Trump administration, court challenges, and subterfuge via dozens of repeal efforts from Congressional Republicans, as well as many states choosing not to expand Medicaid. In spite of all of this, the ACA remains the law of the land. Still, many people remain upset by the significant cost of plans purchased on the marketplace, confusion around health insurance, and a market-based approach that is severely lacking in guaranteeing access to high quality healthcare.

This forum explored the following questions, among others:

  • How do we work toward a long-term goal of a universal and comprehensive healthcare for all?
  • What might we do in Illinois now and how can we learn from what is being explored in other states?
  • Since our new Governor ran on a platform of expanding coverage via a Medicaid-Buy in, what does that mean? How might it work?
  • How can activists work with elected officials to bring about the healthcare system we want?

Speakers:

  • Jaquie Algee, SEIU Healthcare
  • Claudia Fegan, Treasurer and National Coordinator, Physicians for a National Health Program; President, Health & Medicine Policy Research Group
  • Julie Hamos, Health Management Associates
  • Jesse Hoyt, Healthy Illinois Campaign
  • Graciela Guzman, Protect Our Care Illinois
  • Greg Harris, State Representative, 13th District
