Chicago AHEC Internship Program

  • Overview

From 2014-15, the Chicago AHEC Internship Program provided community college students from City Colleges of Chicago-Malcolm X College with a paid opportunity to gain real-world experience in a community health center while also supporting them with monthly meetings focused on developing practical job skills and connecting them with health professionals. The internship program was created to strengthen participant’s interest and commitment toward careers in public health and health care with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of public health professionals committed to working in health promotion and prevention.

Through the program, 16 students successfully completed internships at an established community health center. The internship provided students with an opportunity to fully engage in a community health care center environment: interns were able to take part in job shadowing with a range of health professionals, work on non-clinical health care projects and be a part of the health care center teams.

We are deeply grateful to our three partnering community health centers—Erie Family Health Center, Lawndale Christian Health Center and PCC Community Wellness—for their support of the program. All three sites have an array of resources, a commitment to workforce diversity, and were able to provide a valuable experience for the participants.
