We are committed to partnering with all who share our vision as we do policy research, public education, media relations and coalition building to create an equitable health system…
2011 – our 30th anniversary year — has been an important milestone year for us. Download our 1981-2011 Impact Book
But beyond celebrating three decades working for change, we have been laying the foundation for Health & Medicine’s future.
As a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization that receives its support largely from foundations and individuals it is unrestricted dollars give Health & Medicine the flexibility to direct funds to those areas where they are most urgently needed. But we would also like to make it possible (and easy) for both institutional and individual funders to support any area of our work that speaks to you.
- Supporting HMPRG internships and fellowships – such as our Vital Communities Internship created in honor of HMPRG Co-founder and expert in asset-based community development John McKnight, our Social Justice Internship created ion honor of founding Board member and prevention pioneer Yolanda “Bobby” Hall and other competitive awards like our Chicago Schweitzer Fellowships. Your support will allow us to enrich these initiatives and help us fulfill our commitment to invest in the cultivation of successive generations of justice-driven health care providers, policymakers and advocacy leaders.
- Supporting underrepresented youth entering health careers – through our role as Chicago’s first Area Health Education Center (AHEC). We have developed a Speaker’s Bureau, using HMPRG Board members and public health graduate students; and are reaching out to area youth in CPS programs high schools with programs targeting minority youth interested in entering health professions. Our AHEC is currently funded by a one year federal grant; your support will make it possible for HMPRG to continue working to develop the health care workforce.
- Supporting health systems for elders in Illinois through our convening; the role we played with the Illinois Transitional Care Consortium which led to the creation of The Bridge Model, a social work based transitional care model that has garnered national recognition. Your support will ensure that, during implementation and replication of this model, we can provide the expert guidance and analysis that will reform the way long-term care systems work to help elders stay in their homes and communities and receive appropriate care.
- Supporting constructive services and leadership to court involved youth. We are providing training to staff and leaders in the juvenile justice system in Cook County and across Illinois regarding the particular health and mental health needs of the increasing LGBTQ population in the system. This year we will also undertake a study to determine the level of reproductive health information provided to imprisoned youth. Your support will help us ensure that youth in detention have access to the full array of reproductive health information and services.
- Supporting a comprehensive Cook County health system - through our work to build a regional health system in northern Illinois which, in 2012, will also involve putting forth our proposal for a Cook County Health Authority with independent taxing authority to ensure an adequately funded public health system for those in most need in the County. Your support will help us provide the leadership to policymakers and advocates needed to implement a more seamless safety net.
- Supporting the development of new models of care and new funding streams to support the health care safety net — through collaborations with partners across the region to develop new models of care that meet the State’s goals of Integration of care for people on Medicaid and support the ACA goal of improved quality. We will also continue to work for a fair charity care plan for the state that supports the safety net and provides increased access to care for low income people. Your support will allow us to do the research and secure the local partnerships to better serve the uninsured and the Medicaid population in Illinois.
