Health & Medicine Releases Statement on Killing of Adam Toledo

April 20, 2021

I just came home from another protest and march against police violence. This one, of course, in response to the killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo just a few days ago. The march was, on one hand, inspiring. So many people, every generation, every race and ethnic group, all masked, carrying their homemade posters, chanting together calling for justice and peace. And on the other hand, how many more killings, how many more marches, how many more grieving families and friends before we set about, in earnest, the difficult work of reimagining public safety in our country?

I agree with Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. The system we have is not working. To pretend it is, week after week, murder after murder, is madness. Let’s keep marching and chanting and demanding accountability from our elected officials to join with us in creating the system of justice and peace we deserve.

— Margie Schaps, Executive Director
