Health & Medicine’s Statement on the Violence in the Capitol

January 7, 2021

If you’re like me, you’re exhausted, appalled and saddened by the events of yesterday and the insurrection mounted by Trump supporters as they followed his instructions and sieged the Capitol.

What we witnessed yesterday none of us have seen in our lifetimes. But this white supremacist insurrection sadly shouldn’t be surprising to us. In fact, we have seen similar rage mounted against Black people, immigrants, women and native populations since the founding of our country.

As yesterday’s events unfolded they did so against the backdrop of the highest COVID death count we’ve seen in our country, and as we in Illinois surpassed one million cases.

It is time for all of us to imagine the world we want to see where the focus is on public health and the welfare of the people of our world.

We join with you in imagining that world and working every day to make our dreams real.

In solidarity,

Margie Schaps
