Organization Summary

Health & Medicine Policy Research Group (Health & Medicine) is an independent non-profit health policy and advocacy center in Chicago working to improve the health of all people in Illinois by promoting health equity. Health & Medicine has a thirty-nine year history of promoting health justice in Chicago and Illinois through research, education, policy development, and collaboration.

Position Scope

Health & Medicine is currently seeking a consultant for the Center for Public Health Equity.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Convening external groups: Organizing virtual forums and roundtable discussions
    Tasks: Scheduling, speaker coordination, videoconference hosting, invitations, note taking, and follow-up
  • Internal planning meetings
    Tasks: Scheduling, note taking, and linking discussion and decisions from internal planning meetings to external forums and roundtables (item a)
  • Research / writing support for potential legislative changes or planning
    Tasks: Policy research and writing, outreach to potential partners and supporters, draft outreach to key stakeholders, including legislators
  • Support for other related activities
    Tasks: As projects emerge and time permitting, the consultant will support: outreach, research, writing, and other administrative support

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of health system, policy change, levels of government, and public health concepts
    • Ability to coordinate projects and meet deadlines
    • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
    • Strong ability to plan and execute virtual meetings and events, including: scheduling, video platform set-up, promotion, communicating with registrants, facilitating event flow and presentations, and note taking.
    • Ability to take detailed notes that effectively record the content of a meeting
    • Conduct research on health topics and collaborate on writing
    • Ability to work independently and to seek direction and feedback as needed
    • Advanced competency in Microsoft Office and Google collaborative work software, and familiarity with (or ability to quickly learn) online platforms, such as SurveyMonkey and Zoom
    • Commitment to health equity, social justice, and human rights

Work Environment

  • Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment
  • Sitting for extended periods is required
  • Local travel to off-site locations throughout Chicago, suburbs and across Illinois occasionally required
  • Work week is generally 9am – 5pm, some evening and weekend work required.

Note on Modified Work Environment During COVID-19 Pandemic

To protect the health of staff and to align with public health guidance, Health & Medicine staff have been working remotely since March 2020.  Employees are required to have access to a working internet connection and phoneline that enable them to conduct their work. Health & Medicine’s modified work environment in response to COVID-19 are considered to be temporary and subject to change. We anticipate the work from home policy to be in place at least until the end of 2020 and will continue to monitor and be responsive to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Compensation

This is a temporary 4-month position of approximately 30 hours per week. Pay range is $30-40 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
