From Crisis to Community: Building a Healthier Tomorrow

In a world marked by global turmoil and local challenges, Health & Medicine remains steadfast in advancing health equity and justice. As we confront the impacts of the pandemic and the pressing needs of long-time Chicago residents and new arrivals, we face head-on the strain of an already overburdened healthcare system.

As we continue our efforts, we’re proud to share some highlights from 2024:

    • We’ve conducted over a dozen interviews to explore how city and county health departments can collaborate more effectively.
    • We’ve engaged with the Governor’s office and the Illinois Department on Aging, laying the groundwork for a multisector plan for aging equity in our state.
    • We hosted our 6th annual Trauma-Informed Awareness Day, featuring keynote speaker Lt. Governor Julianna Stratton. We are now helping plan the Uniting Chicagoland Communities Summit.
    • Through the Good Jobs Challenge, we are on schedule to support development of hundreds of public health workers in the next two years.
    • Our Schweitzer Fellowship Program, Chicago Area Health Education Center, and Youth Pathways Committee are also actively supporting the growth of the health workforce.
    •  A bill we supported to create reimbursement for doulas in Illinois has passed. Now, with others, we are beginning to ensure that those who need doula services have access to them.

See our Historical Timeline of Significant Activities for more information on our achievements over the past four decades.

Help us continue our work toward eliminating health inequities in Illinois. Your generosity fuels our work and helps us bring about meaningful change.
